The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
In a state final game while A-6 is at the table waiting to enter the game, it is noticed that A-6 has blood on the uniform jersey. The official brings this to the attention of the coach. A-6 removes his jersey at the bench and puts on a different one. The change of number is reported to the scorer and to an official on the court. No technical foul is assessed. Were the officials correct?
The officials were NOT correct. Although the team followed the correct protocol for changing the number in the book, A-6 is not permitted to remove the jersey within the visual confines of the gym. A technical foul should have been assessed against A-6. In situations like this, it is good practice for an official to remind the coach and player that removing the jersey must be done outside the visual confines of the gym. However, failing to do this does not absolve the player from receiving a technical foul. (References: Rule 10-5-1h)
Have you seen an unusual play? Let all officials benefit from it by sending it to Play of the
Day
Yes, if the officials had told the coach and player to change the shirt out of the visual confines of the gym like they should have, they could have got it correct. Thanks.
