A-1 in his front court in the corner attempts to pass the ball to A-2 near the division line. The pass is high and goes into the backcourt where it is recovered in the free throw semi-circle by A-2. The official rules a backcourt violation and goes to award the ball on the end line to Team B. The Team A coach insists that a backcourt violation is put in play at the division line. Who is correct?
The official is correct. The throw-in for a backcourt violation is put into play at the spot nearest the violation. The violation occurred when A-2 touched the ball.
