The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 in his front court in the corner attempts to pass the ball to A-2 near the division line.  The pass is high and goes into the backcourt where it is recovered in the free throw semi-circle by A-2.  The official rules a backcourt violation and goes to award the ball on the end line to Team B.  The Team A coach insists that a backcourt violation is put in play at the division line.  Who is correct?

The official is correct.  The throw-in for a backcourt violation is put into play at the spot nearest the violation.  The violation occurred when A-2 touched the ball. By rule, the nearest spot when a violation or foul occurs in the semi-circle is the end line. (References: Rule 7-5-2a, 7-5-5, 9-9-1, Official’s Manual Diagrams 4-5 & 5-6)
