2017-18 Play of the Day #34

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

At the end of the game with the score tied A-1 releases a layup just before the buzzer.  As the ball is above the ring and against the backboard (about at the top of the small square), B-1 reaches up through the ring and tries to block the shot. He does not touch the ball.  The ball bounces off the backboard and does not go in. Handle the situation.

The ruling is legal play.  The ball was not touched so it cannot be goaltending. It is not basket interference again because the ball was not touched by the player reaching up through the basket and the ball was not on or in the basket during this activity. Since the player did not touch the ball, there is no penalty for reaching up through the ring. The net was not pulled nor was the ring held on to so there is no technical foul.
