The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
To start the game A-5 and B-5 tap the jump ball. The ball hits the floor after which A-5 catches the ball before anyone else touches the ball. The U-1 rules a jump ball violation. Was the official correct?
The official was NOT correct. The restrictions on the jumpers end when the jump ball ends. The jump ball ends when the ball touches a non-jumper, an official, the floor, the basket or the backboard. Therefore, A-5 was entitled to catch the ball after it hit the floor. (References: Rule 6-3-7, 6-3-8)

I’VE BEEN AROUND BASKETBALL ALL MY 60 YEARS AND THIS IS MY 1ST YEAR AS A CERTIFIED HIGH SCHOOL OFFICIAL AND I CAN TRULY SAY THAT I’VE ENJOYED MY ROOKIE SEASON IN THIS SPORT MUCH BETTER THAN FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL/SOFTBALL!
Glad to hear that you are enjoying it. Tell all your younger friends how much fun it is. We need more officials to cover all the games out there.
