The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 shoots the ball from right by the end line. A-1 is fouled in the act of shooting. The ball passes over the rectangular backboard, hits the ring, bounces up in the air and goes through the goal. Handle the situation.
The basket is NOT counted. By rule, the ball became out-of-bounds and dead when it passed over backboard. Therefore, a dead ball passed through the goal. However, the fact that a violation occurred after the player had been fouled in the act of shooting does not change that fact. A-1 is entitled to 2 free throws because of being fouled in the act of shooting an unsuccessful goal.
