The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
Team A has the AP arrow. Late in the 2nd quarter, A-1 is fouled. Both the scoreboard and the scorer indicate that it is the 10th team foul of the half. A-1 misses the 1st free throw. At this point the scorer notifies the officials that the foul was only the 9th team foul of the half. The officials huddle and decide to award the ball to Team A under the alternating possession rule. Were the officials correct?
The officials were correct. At this point A-1 has attempted and missed the only free throw she is entitled to. The point of interruption is after the missed free throw. There is no team control. This makes utilizing the alternating possession rule the only way to resume play. Even though A-1 attempted the free throw, Team A is awarded the ball for the throw-in.
