The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
During the 2nd quarter Team B receives a behavioral warning which is recorded in the scorebook. During the 4th quarter Team B interferes with the ball as it comes through the goal. The official rules a technical foul for delay of game. Was the official correct?
The official was NOT correct. Although Team B has received a behavioral warning, it is not a delay of game warning. By rule, the first occurrence of a delay of game situation (specifically, breaking the boundary line plane, interfering with the ball after a goal, huddling in the free throw and not having the court ready for play after a timeout) is handled with a warning. Since no previous delay of game warning had been issued, one should have been issued here. Ruling a technical foul was incorrect. (References: Rule 10-2-1c, d, e, f, 4-48, Case Book Play 4-48)
