The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 drives the lane for a dunk. When A-1 attempts his dunk, the ball hits the back of the ring and goes straight up within the cylinder. A-1 continues to hold on to the ring trying to avoid landing on B-3 and B-2 who are underneath him. The ball then passes through the basket while A-1 is still holding the ring. The officials rule the basket good.
Were the officials correct?
The officials were NOT correct. It is legal for A-1 to grasp the ring in order to avoid injury to himself or others. However, there is no exception to the basket interference rule. Since A-1’s hands were on the ring while the ball passed through the goal, offensive basket interference should have been ruled. Team B should have been awarded a designated spot throw-in on the end line. While it is normally the responsibility of the outside official(s) to make this ruling, any official including the lead who saw this can make this ruling.
