The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
An official rules a common foul on A1. Team B inbounds the ball nearest the spot of the foul, and quickly scores a basket. As the ball drops through the net, the timer sounds the horn to get the officials’ attention and the official nearest the table blows his whistle. The table reports the foul on A1 should have resulted in a 1 and 1 free throw for B1. The officials count the goal by Team B and award Team A a throw-in on the endline to resume play. Were the officials correct?
The officials were NOT correct. The officials were correct in counting the goal and Team A will receive the ball for a throw-in on the endline. Team A will be able to move along the endline since the point of interruption is after the successful goal by Team B. However, by rule, the time frame to correct the failure to award free throw(s) has not yet expired. The ball passing through the goal is the 1st dead ball after the clock had started. B1 should have been awarded a bonus free throw situation with no players lined up along the lane. (References: Rule 2.10.1a, 2.10.2, 2.10.5, 2.10.6, 4.36.2b)
