The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
During the 4th quarter a held ball occurs. As the players line up for the AP throw-in, A-1 and B-1 begin trading words. The officials sound the whistle as the head coaches from both teams and the assistant coach from Team A rush onto the court to prevent the situation from escalating. Handle the situation.
Whether the players’ actions have reached the level of an unsporting act is a decision for the officials on the court. The head coaches are permitted to come onto the court to help keep a situation like this from escalating. However, unless beckoned by the officials, the assistant coach should not be out on the court. The assistant coach’s role in situations like these is to see that no team member leaves the bench and comes onto the court. The fewer extra people there are on the court, the less likely it is that the situation will escalate. The assistant coach should be charged with a technical foul.
The technical foul charged to the assistant coach would be under 10-5-2. This results in two free throws for Team B and possession of the ball for a throw-in from the division line. Also the head coach would receive an indirect technical foul for the actions of the assistant coach and would lose the right to use the coaching box. The AP arrow would not be switched. So, I am assuming the possession arrow will not change and team B gets the ball out of bounds, at the X, after shooting two ft’s for the technical foul on the asst. coach from team A. I am also to assume the asst. coach from team A is ejected for coming on the court? Now, this is all assuming the assistant coach was not beckoned onto the court by the officials. Please clarify as if the technical foul was given to the assistant coach. Also, please clarify the type of technical foul given and all penalties against team A.
