The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 attempts a shot with a few seconds on the clock.  The try misses.  During rebounding action B-5 bats the ball into the air to keep it away from A-5.  While it is in the air, the horn sounds ending the quarter.  The ball then passes through the basket.  Handle the situation.

The bat by B-5 does not constitute a try or tap for goal.  As such, the ball becomes dead when the horn sounds ending the period.  Therefore, a dead ball passed through the basket.  No score.   (References: Rule 5.6.2)

  1. Ed Griffis

As seen on TV Gonzaga vs Tennessee. At game end with score tied Player A1 releases a layup just before the buzzer which is a little too strong. As the ball is above the cylinder and against the backboard (about at the top of the small square) the defender B1 reaches up through the rim and tries to reach the ball. He does not touch the ball and the ball bounces off the backboard over the other side of the rim and does not go in. What is the call?

No Call. The ball was not touched so it cannot be goaltending. It is not basket interference because the ball was not touched when the ball was on or in the basket. Since the player did not touch the ball there is no penalty for reaching up through the rim. The net was not pulled or the rim held on to so no technical violation. Note: the referees got it right but you should have heard the nonsense the color announcers came up with.
