The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 is in the backcourt when she tries to pass the ball to A-2.  A-2 jumps from the frontcourt, catches the ball while in the air over backcourt and then lands in the backcourt with the ball.

Handle the situation.


This is a backcourt violation.  An airborne player’s location is where that player was last in contact with the floor.  Therefore, A-2’s location when she caught the ball was in frontcourt regardless of what part of the court she was over.  The ball got frontcourt status when it was caught by A-2.  When A-2 landed in backcourt,  the ball’s status changed to backcourt.  By rule, this is a violation.
