The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-3 is dribbling the ball near the division line when B-3 is whistled for a common foul. After the whistle, A-3 dribbles to the basket and dunks the ball.
Handle the situation.
A-3 should be charged with a technical foul for dunking a dead ball. This is different than dunking in pre-game as the foul is charged to A-3. Pregame dunking is a team technical foul. The penalties for the fouls should be imposed in the order that the fouls were committed. If Team A is in the bonus, A-3 will attempt two free throws with no players lined up along the lane. If Team A is not in the bonus, then play will proceed directly to the free throws for Team B for the technical foul. Again, no one will line up along the lane. Play will be resumed with a designated spot throw-in for Team B from the division line opposite the table.
