Play of the Day 456 (2024-25)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-3 is dribbling the ball near the division line when B-3 is whistled for a common foul.  After the whistle, A-3 dribbles to the basket and dunks the ball.

Handle the situation.

A-3 should be charged with a technical foul for dunking a dead ball.  This is different than dunking in pre-game as the foul is charged to A-3.  Pregame dunking is a team technical foul.  The penalties for the fouls should be imposed in the order that the fouls were committed.  If Team A is in the bonus, A-3 will attempt two free throws with no players lined up along the lane.  If Team A is not in the bonus, then play will proceed directly to the free throws for Team B for the technical foul.  Again, no one will line up along the lane.  Play will be resumed with a designated spot throw-in for Team B from the division line opposite the table.
