Play of the Day 444 (2024-25)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

Neither team is in the bonus.  A-1 is dribbling the ball in the frontcourt when B-1 is whistled for a common foul against A-1.  B-1 winds up with the ball.  B-1 then drops the ball and lets it roll away instead of passing it to an official.

Handle the situation.

This is a delay-of-game situation.  If Team B has not previously been warned for delay-of-game, a team warning should be issued against Team B.  This warning should be recored in the scorebook and the head coach for Team B should be notified about the warning.  A warning is a point-of-interruption play so play will be resumed with a throw-in for Team A from the closest “magic” spot to the foul.

If Team B had previously been warned for delay-of-game, then a team technical foul should be charged against Team B.  Team A would be awarded two free throws and possession of the ball for a throw-in at the division line opposite the table.
