The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 drives to the basket on a fast break.  As A-1 is beginning to lay the ball up on the backboard, B-1 intentionally pushed A-1 in the back with two hands.  The ball goes through the basket.

Handle the situation.


Since A-1 was in the act of shooting, the goal counts.  Because the foul was intentional, A-1 is awarded two free throws even though the goal was counted.  No players will line up during the free throw attempts.  The penalty for an intentional foul is always two free throws unless the foul occurs against a three point shooter who is unsuccessful.  Then the penalty is three free throws.  The ball is awarded to Team A out of bounds on the end line at the “magic” spot nearest to where the foul occurred.
