The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

During the third quarter, A-4 and B-4 get into a fight.  All three officials rush to the spot of the brawl in an attempt to stop the fight and keep it from spreading.

Is this correct procedure?

This is not correct procedure.  One official should monitor the activity of the benches.  Generally speaking, this should be the official who is furthest from the spot of the fight.  In high school, we do not have the luxury of going to the monitor to determine the penalties to be imposed.  Since there are penalties for leaving the bench during a fight, someone needs to monitor the benches.

The same is true for a two-person crew.  One official should monitor the bench activity so that an accurate accounting can be made after order is restored.
