The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
As time is running out in the quarter, A-3 starts up to attempt a jump shot. A-3 is fouled by B-3. A-3 continues up and the horn sounds signaling that time has run out in the quarter. A-3 then releases the shot and the ball goes through the basket.
Handle the situation.
A-3 was fouled before the horn sounded. So, A-3 has been fouled in the act of shooting. The question here is should the goal be counted?
When the whistle sounded, the clock should have stopped. The ball remained live since this was a continuous motion situation.
However, a few ticks ran off and the horn sounded. Time needs to be put back on the clock. The officials will have to determine how much (probably 0:00.1 to 0:00.3).
Since time will be put back on the clock, the quarter was not over when the try was released. The goal will be counted. A-3 should be awarded one free throw with players lined up along the lane. Play will resume as after any free throw.
