The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 attempts a three-point try. The try is unsuccessful and A-5 hits the ball away from B-5 during the rebound attempt. The ball heads towards the top of the key where it is deflected by A-2. The ball strikes the floor near the division line in frontcourt. A-1 muffs the ball in trying to recover it. The ball goes into the backcourt where it is recovered by A-1
Handle the situation.
The release of the try ended team control by Team A. The batting of the ball by A-5 did not create team control. The deflection by A-2 did not create team control. The muffing of the ball by A-1 did not create team control. Since no team control existed in the frontcourt for Team A, Team A was entitled to recover the ball in backcourt. This was a legal play.
