The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
During play in Team A’s frontcourt, B-1 deflects the ball into the backcourt. The ball is near the division line in backcourt when A-1 picks up the ball with the left foot in the air and the right foot in frontcourt. A-1 then puts the left foot down in backcourt.
Handle the situation.
This is a backcourt violation. When A-1 picked up the ball, he gave the ball frontcourt status since he was not dribbling the ball. When he placed his left foot down in backcourt, this gave the ball backcourt status and resulted in a backcourt violation.
The requirement that all three items (the ball and both feet) be in frontcourt before the ball is in frontcourt applies only to the situation where a dribbler is advancing from backcourt to frontcourt.
