The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
With 1.8 seconds left in a game with Team A leading by two points, A-5 goes to the free throw line for one free throw. As A-5 begins the shooting motion, A-3, who is lined up along the lane, fakes entering the lane. No one violates. The official rules a free throw violation on A-3. The ball passes through the basket. The official cancels the goal and awards the ball to Team B for a designated spot throw-in on the end line.
Was the official correct?
The official was not correct. If the free throw shooter fakes a try, then an immediate violation is ruled. However, if a player in a marked lane space fakes entering the lane, this action is only penalized if an opponent is caused to enter the lane early.
