The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-2, who is holding the ball in the frontcourt near the division line, attempts to pass the ball to A-2. The ball hits the division line and is caught by A-2, who is in the frontcourt.
Handle the situation.
This is a backcourt violation. Although A-2 is in the frontcourt, the rule states that an offensive player may not be the first player to touch the ball after it goes backcourt if the offense was the last to touch the ball before it went backcourt. The position of the player and the ball at the time of the touching is not relevant.
The ball should be awarded to Team B out of bounds at the spot nearest to where A-2 touched the ball.
