The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 is dribbling the ball in the backcourt. A-1 attempts to pass the ball to A-2 who is straddling the division line. A-2 jumps and catches the ball while airborne. A-2 lands with the first foot coming down in the frontcourt and the second foot coming down in the backcourt.
Handle the situation.
This is a backcourt violation. Although there is an exception in the rules for a throw-in, a jump ball and a defensive player catching the ball while airborne, no such exception exists for this play. When A-2’s first foot landed in frontcourt, this gave A-2 and the ball frontcourt status. When A-2’s other foot touched in backcourt, A-2 violated.

This doesn’t consist of all three points to become front court status. A2 started out as backcourt status, shouldn’t he/she remain bc status in til all three points crossed?
The three points rule only applies to a dribbler (4-4-6). Since this was a pass, when A-2 landed with a foot in frontcourt, that gave the ball frontcourt status. Once the other foot touched in backcourt, a violation occurred.
Very Good Play. The Player had frontcourt status, then stepped with the other foot in the Backcourt.
Thanks!
