The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
Both teams are in the bonus. A-1 passes the ball to A-3 in the corner behind the three-point line. As A-3 is beginning the motion to shoot but with the ball still in her hands, B-5 pushes A-5 in the lane and is whistled for the foul by the Lead official. A-3 continues her motion, releases the try and the ball passes through the goal.
Handle the situation.
Since the Lead’s attention was focused on the players in the lane, this play requires the Lead and the Trail to communicate about the sequence of events. If they determine that A-3 had begun the motion to shoot, A-3 is allowed to continue that motion. Since the ball passed through the goal, a three-point goal will be scored for Team A. Since Team A was in the bonus, A-5 will be awarded a bonus free-throw situation. Players will line up and play off the make or miss.
