B1 is charged with fouling A1 while A1 is in the act of shooting. After reporting the foul, the official scorer informs the official that B1 has five fouls. The official notifies the coach. The player complains that this is only his fourth foul. The visiting scorer agrees with the player.
Handle the situation.
Unless the referee has definite knowledge otherwise, the totals in the official book will stand. However, when there are two books, a further check is warranted. All foul count totals should be checked. If other discrepancies are found, the officiating crew should confer to see if they have definite knowledge which will allow the referee to make a correction.
