Play of the Day #223 (2021-22)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A1 is fouled in the act of shooting.  When the official is almost ready to administer the first free throw, all the Team B players are near their bench receiving instructions from their coach.

Handle the situation.

The rules state that the first lane spaces next to the end line “shall be occupied by opponents of the free thrower.” The official should direct that two defenders must come to occupy those lane spaces.  If Team B does not do this, then a team technical should be ruled since Team B is delaying the game by preventing the ball from being put in play.

Very Good Play. Correct and I have told the Defensive Team to occupy the first two spots,
but have never had to give a Technical Foul. Thanks.
