The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
Both teams are in the bonus. A5 pulls down a rebound and B5 fouls A5 while trying to tie the ball up. The official sounds his whistle. Just after the whistle sounds, A5 pulls the ball away from B5 and hits B1 in the face with his elbow.
Handle the situation.
Under the points of emphasis from 2012-13, such contact by A5 above the shoulders is considered an intentional foul. Since the ball was dead at the time the contact occurred, the foul is an intentional technical foul. The penalties for the fouls are administered in the order that they occurred.
First, A5 will attempt his bonus free throw situation with no players lined up along the lane. Then, any player or eligible substitute for Team B will attempt the free throws for the technical foul against A5. After this the ball will be awarded to Team B at the division line opposite the table.
