The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
During the jump ball, the jumpers are facing the wrong direction. A5 taps the ball to A1. A1 recognizes that his correct basket is behind him. A1 dribbles in and scores there.
Handle the situation.
This play stresses the importance of being alert when the game is about to start. It is the responsibility of the crew to ensure that the teams are lined up correctly for the jump ball.
This is not a correctable error. Since A1 recognized where the correct basket was, the goal is counted. The officials should stop play and make sure that both teams are aware of which basket they should be trying to score in.

Very Interested Play. Yes, We as Officials need to be aware to make sure Teams are
lined up the right way before the jump ball. Happened to me in my first year of
officiating working with a veteran official and he threw the ball up for a jump. I
finally got his attention and said I think the Teams are going the wrong way. One of
my first few games i worked and not the way to start out. Thanks.
