The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A1 passes the ball to A3. After A3 catches the passes, he takes one quick dribble around a screen. A3 then goes up and dunks the ball while being fouled by B5. Three members of Team’s A bench rush onto the court to high five A3.
Handle the situation.
A3 will be awarded one free throw with no players lined up along the lane. Team A is charged with one technical foul for the three members of the bench who ran onto the floor. The Team A head coach receives one indirect technical foul and loses the right to use the coaching box for the remainder of the game. Team B will attempt two free throws and receive the ball for a throw-in at the division line opposite the table.
The NFHS has determined when there are similar multiple infractions that occur at the same time, it is not the intent of the rules to penalize each infractions as a separate technical foul. This excludes situations involving team members who leave the bench during a confrontation or fight.
