The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
Both teams are in the double bonus. Team A is leading by two points with 42 seconds to go. After a timeout, A-1 is taking the ball out on the end line in backcourt. Team B is pressing full court. A-1 sees A-4 in the frontcourt guarded by B-4. A-1 throws a pass towards A-4. Just before the pass arrives, A-4 pushes off B-4 in order to receive the pass. The official rules a foul on A-4 and awards B-4 two free throws.
Was the official correct?
The official was not correct. The common foul committed by A-4 is during the throw-in. Therefore, by rule, it is a team control foul. Team B should have been awarded the ball out of bounds at the spot nearest the foul.
