The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 is fouled in the act of shooting. After the foul has been reported, Team B requests and is granted a timeout. After the timeout has ended, A-1 is standing near the division line receiving instructions from his coach. A-1 remains there after being directed to step up to the free throw line by the administering official.
Handle the situation.
This is a resumption of play situation after a timeout. The official should place the ball at the free throw line and begin the ten-second count. The only way for Team A to save the free throw is to request and be granted a timeout. A-1 cannot enter the free throw semi-circle since to do so would be a free throw violation. This is not a situation where a warning is administered to a team.

Excellent Case Play. All should realize that the resumption of play cannot be used for free throws, UNLESS following a time-out or intermission. Any other time, A1 may be charged with a technical foul for failure to enter the Free Throw Semi-Circle when instructed by an Official. Ball cannot, by rule, be placed on the FT line.
Very Interested Play. With the Timeout, A-1 must call time to avoid the Violation.
It would be different if there was no Timeout. Thanks.
