Play of the Day #179 (2020-21)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 is dribbling in the backcourt and passes the ball to A-2 who is straddling the division line.  While straddling the division line, A-2 starts a dribble by bouncing the ball in frontcourt and then retreats into backcourt.

Handle the situation.

This is a legal play.  By rule, A-2 is located in the backcourt while straddling the division line.  Since A-2 had started a dribble while located in backcourt, the ball and both feet of A-2 must touch entirely in frontcourt for the ball to achieve frontcourt status.  Of course, the ten-second count continues throughout this play.

Very Good Play. Correct. Has not gained frontcourt status yet. We, as Officials, definitely
need to administer this Play correctly. Thanks.
