Play of the Day #154 (2020-21)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 has a frontcourt, end line throw-in.  A-1 attempts to pass the ball to A-2 who is between the top of the key and the division line.  A-2 muffs the pass and the ball goes into the backcourt where it is recovered by A-3.

Is this a backcourt violation?

This is NOT a backcourt violation.  During a throw-in, player control must be obtained inbounds before it would be possible to have a backcourt violation.  A-2’s muff did not establish player control.  Player control was first obtained by A-3 when she recovered the ball in backcourt.

Very Good Play. We, as Officials, need to know the Backcourt Rule and know this is
    not a Backcourt Situation. Thanks.
