The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
On the jump ball to start the game jumper A-5 taps the ball over his opponent’s head. While the ball is bouncing towards the sideline, players from both teams contact the ball trying to gain control. Just before the ball goes out of bounds, A-1 finally gains control and then immediately steps out of bound. The official awards the ball to Team B and has the alternating possession arrow pointed towards Team A’s basket.
Was the official correct?
The official was NOT correct. By rule, as long as possession was clear, once A-1 gained control of the ball, the alternating possession arrow must be set pointing towards Team B’s basket even though A-1 then immediately stepped out of bounds.
(Reference: Rule 6-4-1)
