Play of the Day #143 (2020-21)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 drives into the lane and contacts B-1 knocking her to the floor.  The Lead signals a blocking foul on B-1 and the Trail signals a player control foul on A-1.  B-1’s foul is the seventh team foul of the half for Team B.

Handle the situation.

This is a double foul by rule under high school rules.  Each player is assessed one personal foul.  Although B-1’s foul is the seventh team foul of the half for Team B,  it is not a common foul.  It is part of a double foul.  So the bonus free throw rule does not come into effect here.  This is a point of interruption play.  Since A-1 was dribbling the ball at the moment the double foul occurred, Team A was in control.  The ball is awarded to Team A for a throw-in on the end line at the spot nearest to where the ball was located when the double foul occurred.
