The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

During the fourth quarter, A-1 is fouled in the act of shooting by B-1.  After the whistle has sounded and the try has ended, A-1 goes over and pushes B-1.  B-1 does not retaliate.  However, B-6 and B-7 rush off the bench to the area where the confrontation is taking place.  No Team A bench personnel come onto the court.

Handle the situation.

B-6 and B-7 receive flagrant technical fouls and are disqualified to the bench for leaving the bench during a confrontation.  A-1 receives a technical foul for intentional contact during a dead ball.  The team foul total for Team B is increased by three (2 technical fouls and the foul in the act of shooting).  The team foul total for Team A is increased by one (technical foul on A-1).  The coach of Team B receives an indirect technical foul since Team B bench personnel went onto the court during the confrontation.

The coach of Team B loses the right to use the coaching box.  Penalties are administered in the order of occurrence.  No one will line up for any free throws.  A-1 will attempt his free throws for being fouled in the act of shooting first.  Team B will attempt two free throws for the technical foul against A-1 next.  Then Team A will attempt two free throws for the Team B members who came off the bench.  Remember, since there was no fight, there is only one technical foul penalty even though two came off the bench.  Since Team B’s technical fouls were the last ones in sequence, Team A is awarded the ball at the division line opposite the table for a throw-in.
