The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 drives to the basket and is fouled attempting a layup. When A-1 goes to the free throw line to attempt his free throws, blood is detected on his jersey.
Handle the situation.
A-1 will be directed to leave the game. If the coach of Team A wishes, he may be granted a timeout in order to keep A-1 in the game. This timeout must be granted before the replacement interval begins. If the situation can be corrected by the end of the timeout, A-1 may remain in the game to attempt his free throws.
If the correction of the situation involves a new jersey with a different number, this must be reported to the official scorer as well as one of the officials on the court.
If the coach does not want to use a timeout, then A-1’s replacement will attempt the free throws. A-1 will then have to stay out for at least one tick of the clock before returning to play.
