The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-1 was fouled in the act of shooting.  She retaliates by pushing B-1 who had fouled her.  A-1 was given a technical foul and this foul was A-1’s fifth foul.  Team A’s coach states that A-1 gets to stay in the game and shoot her free throws before being disqualified.  Was Team A’s coach correct?

The coach is NOT correct.  The fifth foul results in A-1’s immediate disqualification. A-1’s substitute will attempt A-1’s free throws with no one lined up along the lane.  Then any Team B player or eligible sub will attempt the free throws for the technical foul.  Team B will get a designated spot throw-in from the division line opposite the table.
