B-1 commits a common foul against A-1. The scorer indicates that this is the seventh team foul of the half. The lead official mistakenly announces two shots. When A1 misses the first free throw, the players do not rebound. A-3 picks up the ball and passes it to the Lead official. The officials discuss the mistake and decide to issue the second free throw to A1. Play resumes with A-1 shooting a second free throw. Were the officials correct?
The officials were NOT correct. All players on both teams were put at a disadvantage when the Lead announced two shots. Play should be ruled dead and the ball should be awarded via the alternating possession procedure.
