The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
During the 2nd quarter A-1, who is near the end line, attempts a wild shot. The ball starts behind the backboard and goes from one side to the other behind the backboard. At one point it is higher than the top of the backboard. The ball lands six inches inbounds near the end line. The ball did not hit anything while in flight.
Handle the situation.
This is legal play. For an out-of-bounds violation to occur, the ball has to pass OVER the backboard in either direction.. That did not happen. If the ball had hit any of the supports, it would have been out of bounds. However, that did not happen either. If it had hit the back of the backboard, it would have been out of bounds. Again, that did not happen.
