The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
B-1 fouls A-1 with 2.3 seconds remaining in a tie game. It is Team B’s 7th team foul of the half. However, the scorer does not notify the officials and Team A is given a designated spot throw-in. Team A’s last second try is unsuccessful.
After the jump ball to start the overtime has been tapped out of bounds, the scorer discovers the error of not awarding free throw(s) for the foul just before the end of the game.
Handle the situation.
Since the overtime period has started, it is too late to correct the error of not awarding the merited free throws. Play will continue in the overtime period.
This play emphasizes the importance of confirming with the table the bonus free throw situation near the end of the game.
