The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
B-1 fouls A-1 with 2.3 seconds remaining in a tie game. It is Team B’s 7th team foul of the half. However, the scorer does not notify the officials and Team A is given a designated spot throw-in. Team A’s last second try is unsuccessful.
While the referee is communicating with the table about the upcoming overtime period, the scorer discovers the error of not awarding free throw(s) for the foul just before the end of the game.
Handle the situation.
Since the overtime period has not yet started, A-1 will be given a free throw with no players lined up. If the free throw is successful, the game is over. If the free throw is unsuccessful, the overtime will be played starting with a jump ball.
