The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
During the 4th quarter of a tightly-contested game, Blue #24 is fouled during a rebound. The official announces that #24 is the shooter. After walking to the other end of the court, Blue #11 walks to the free throw line and the Lead official bounces him the ball. At this point it is discovered that Blue #11 is the wrong shooter.
Handle the situation.
Since the free throw is underway, Blue #11 is guilty of accepting a free throw to which he is not entitled. The officials should charge Blue #11 with a technical foul for unsporting conduct.
The officials should clear the lane and award Blue #24 the free throw(s) that he is still entitled to. After this any member of the home team will attempt two free throws for the technical foul on Blue #11. Then the ball will be awarded to the home team for a designated spot throw-in at the division line opposite the table.
