The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
During a throw-in, A-1 passes the ball to A-2 in the frontcourt. The ball bounces off A-2, hits on the floor in frontcourt and then bounces into the backcourt where the ball is recovered by A-2. The official rules a backcourt violation. Is the official correct?
The official is NOT correct. Although team control exists during a throw-in, it only exists to adjudicate the type of common foul committed by the team throwing the ball in. In order to have a backcourt violation player control must exist inbounds. Since the pass was not caught by A-2, the first instance of player control occurred when A-2 recovered the ball in backcourt. This was legal play. (References: Rule 9-9-1, NFHS Interpretation)
