The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
During the 4th quarter B-1 is whistled for an illegal screen. The scorer notifies the official that it is B-1’s 5th foul. B-6, who is waiting to come into the game, is beckoned in by the official and replaces B-1. The official, thinking that the coach already knows it is B-1’s 5th, does not notify the coach. Two minutes later, B-1 returns to the game. The ball is in play when the scorer has the horn sounded to get the officials’ attention that B-1 is in the game with 5 fouls.
Handle the situation.
By rule a player is not disqualified until the coach is notified regardless of how many fouls that player has accumulated. B-1 should be removed from the game and the coach should be told that B-1 is disqualified. No penalty is applied since the player has not been disqualified under the rules. This play illustrates the importance of following the protocols established within the rules for disqualification even if an official thinks the coach knows. (References: Rule 4-14-2)
