The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A1 is being closely guarded by B1 near the division line in front court.  B1 deflects the ball away from A1 while A1 is dribbling. The ball hits the trail official who is standing inbounds.  This prevents the deflected ball from going out of bounds. The trail official blows his whistle when the ball contacts him.

Handle the situation.

This is an inadvertent whistle.  The ball becomes dead when the whistle is sounded.  By rule Team A still has team control.  As such, the ball should be awarded to Team A for a designated spot throw-in out of bounds nearest to where the ball was when the whistle was sounded.      (References: Rule 4-36-1, 4-36-2a, 4-12-3, 4-12-4)
