The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A1 dribbles to a spot on the wing and jumps to attempt a try.  After going airborne, A1 loses control of the ball, then returns to the floor and regains control of the loose ball without anyone else touching the ball.  A1 then dribbles in and scores.  The official rules a legal play.  Was the official correct?

The official was NOT correct.  By rule, A1 losing control of the ball is a fumble.  Anyone can recover a fumble.  So A1’s recovery of the loose ball is legal.  However, since A1 had previously dribbled, A1 cannot dribble again. This is a violation for dribbling the ball a second time.   (References: Rule 4-21, 4-15, 9-5 )
