A-1 rebounds a missed try in the lane underneath the backboard. Unable to attempt a shot, A-1 passes the ball out to A-2 behind the three-point line. A-1 then steps out of bounds under the basket to avoid receiving a three-second violation. The official rules a violation for leaving the court for an unauthorized reason. Was the official correct?
The official was correct. The rules makers intended for the game to be played within the confines of the playing court as much as possible. While there are times where momentum may carry a player out of bounds, a player is not permitted to leave the court intentionally to avoid a violation.
