The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 is attempting to make a throw-in from his endline in frontcourt. He throws the ball toward the division line. B-1 who is in the frontcourt deflects the ball which hits A-2 in the frontcourt and then goes into the backcourt. A-3 recovers the ball in the backcourt. The trail official rules a backcourt violation since team control exists during a throw-in and A-2 was the last to touch the ball in frontcourt. Was the official correct?
The official was NOT correct. Team control that exists during a throw-in exists for one reason only. That reason is the handling of the penalty for a common foul committed by the team who has the throw-in. The backcourt rule does not come into effect during a throw-in situation until player control is obtained inbounds. (References: Rule 9-9-1, 2011-12 Comments on Rule Changes)
