The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
Team A is not in the bonus. A1 is shooting the 2nd free throw for a two-shot foul. After A1 releases the ball, but before the ball contacts the basket, B1 enters the lane, crosses the free throw line and fouls A1. The free throw was not successful.
Handle the situation.
Two things have happened. There was a free throw violation which is a delayed dead ball violation. This was followed by a foul against the shooter A1. Since the free throw was unsuccessful, a substitute free throw will be awarded. Since the penalty for a common foul before the bonus is in effect is possession of the ball, no players will line up along the lane for the substitute free throw. After the free throw, the ball is awarded to Team A for a throw-in nearest the spot of the foul. Since the foul occurred in the free throw semi-circle, the throw-in will be on the endline.
